ABOUT

TIM WALLACE / JOURNALIST / EDITOR / WRITER

I’m Tim Wallace the Melbourne-based journalist, editor and writer. Not to be confused with Tim Wallace the deputy economics editor at The Telegraph, Tim Wallace the senior editor for geography at The New York Times, or Tim Wallace the winner of Britain’s Bathroom Manufacturers Association’s Media Award for Best Trade Journalist of 2016. If you’re looking for these Tims you’re in the wrong place.

I started in journalism in Perth, Western Australia, as a paperboy, selling The Daily News, an afternoon newspaper, after school to factory and office workers. I have now been in journalism for three decades. I’ve worked on newspapers, magazines, books and websites. I’ve held most jobs in the editorial food chain: freelancer, staff writer, subeditor, chief subeditor, deputy editor, associate editor and editor. From 2018 to 2023 I was deputy editor, business and economy, at The Conversation Australia.

Newspapers

I did my cadetship at The Canberra Times, then moved to the Australian Financial Review, where my roles included letters editor and chief subeditor of AFR Boss magazine. I then worked for The Age, the AFR again, and The Sydney Morning Herald.

Magazines

At the Australian Financial Review I worked on the magazines AFR Magazine and AFR Boss (as chief subeditor). I’ve worked a range of contract gigs including production editor of specialist publications The Diplomat (foreign affairs and trade) and Cosmos (science).

Books

I’ve written and edited content for several books on sustainability: True Green, True Green @ Work; Small Business, Big Opportunity – Sustainable Growth; and Planet to Plate – the Earth Hour Cookbook.

Writing

I’ve had articles published in The AFR Magazine; Artlink, Australian Financial Review, Boss Magazine, The Canberra Times, Crikey, Eureka Street, G Magazine, The National Times, Mercatornet, Online Opinion, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Diplomat and Walkley Magazine.
